Black Female Form:
Black Healing in Scorched Landscapes

Heading from Canva.png

Black Healing in Scorched Landscapes is a continuation of Black Female Form—an ongoing artistic project by Sarah Nakiito. The project explores minority stress and decolonial methods of recovery through spaces for rest, film, and installations.

Through a series of interventions, the project highlights Black womxn, examining the intersection of Black womxn’s corporeality, mental health, and collective healing through art, dialogue, and practice.

The project is based on an examination of historical and colonial structures that have shaped perceptions of Black corporeality and mental health. It sheds light on how oppressive practices—such as the transatlantic slave trade, medical experiments, and colorism—have influenced contemporary experiences of minority stress.

Every other Saturday in May, a series of separatist interventions will take place in Malmö for Black womxn and non-binary people in collaboration with Black Archives Sweden and Malmö Konsthall. Through Black Healing in Scorched Landscapes, space is created to share experiences, interpret the project’s themes, and explore new perspectives on healing and resistance.

Guest participants include Mmabatho Thobejane, a South African artist, curator, and initiated traditional healer, who will share her knowledge and healing practices. A Talk Show with Esther Koki and Joan Waweru will center on the experiences of Kenyan women living in Sweden. The final event will be hosted by the Norwegian organization Edges & Drinks, which, in the lecture The Art of Holding Space, will present their methods for creating inclusive spaces and organizing their annual events in Oslo.

These events serve as a platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collective exploration of healing and resistance.

Note: These interventions are exclusively for Black womxn and non-binary individuals.

The Program:
